Learning Lifelong Trades Skills at The Bridge

Some of the most empowering programs offered at The Bridge Teen Center are our trades-based programs. From woodworking and power tools to car maintenance and welding, students have the opportunity to gain valuable hands-on experience while learning practical life skills.

“The programs have taught me real day-to-day skills, like using drills and power tools, woodworking, and working on car batteries and spark plugs,” shared a 10th-grade Bridge student. “It gives you the chance to learn things now that will help you when you are older.”

Another student discovered a passion for the automotive field through our “Gearheads” program, which gives students an inside look at working on a professional race car team. That experience sparked his interest in automotive repair and ultimately led him to pursue a career in the industry.

Providing opportunities to learn through trades-based programs is incredibly important because these experiences teach practical, lifelong skills that extend far beyond the classroom. Many of these opportunities have been reduced or eliminated in traditional education settings and, in many cases, are not being taught at home either.

By introducing teens to these experiences early, we are helping keep these valuable trades alive while also opening doors to meaningful career paths and greater independence. These programs build confidence, encourage critical thinking, and give students a sense of satisfaction that comes from creating, repairing, and accomplishing something on their own.
