An ice-cream cake covered with an igloo of meringue emerging from an oven is a real showstopper. This old-fashioned dessert originated at New York City's Delmonico's restaurant to commemorate the purchase of Alaska in 1867, which is where the name “Baked Alaska” comes from. Make this delightful dessert by topping a cake base with ice cream and a whipped meringue (sweetened egg whites). Then quickly bake it in an oven or torch the exterior for an ice cream cake that will wow your guests!
